I would like to know the name of a movie I saw on TV a long time ago.
Probably B&W, probably British, I estimate made between 1950-1964.
Quite possibly a movie adaptation of a book you might know.
A serious drama, the principle characters are teen boys, who could be
attending an old ivy-covered private school in England or New England.
Perhaps on a dare, several boys try to climb up the outside of a big
square bell tower or steeple late at night. SCROLL DOWN SPOILER:

The movie ends in tragedy, the climax being when one of the boys falls
from the tower, and if I remember correctly, he dies,
and as dawn breaks at the end, his friend is quite distraught.
Any ideas what this film could be?
ruleouts: I know it is not "The Guinea Pig" (1948) or "If..." (1969).
