Have a JVC DR-MV1S DVD recorder and VCR combo, It is almost out of its
12/12 warranty and I have just sent it back to the service center for
the second time.

When I got it, there was a problem reading an occasional DVD ( all
factory pressed prerecorded). On insertion of certain DVDs the JVC
machine would "read" for a long time and then end up saying "Disc
error". It was always with a particular no. of DVDs. Then the problem
was getting worse and previously playable DVDs were giving "Disc
error". So I took it to the service centre and they had it for a month
waiting for parts.

When I got it back it played all my DVDs except one - Pride & Prejudice
Disc 2 BBC production. Rang the service centre and was told that I
can't expect my DVD player to play all DVDs! There will be some DVDs
that it will not be able to play because of lack of quality control in
the industry I was told. I took this for face failure and accepted that
I had a dud DVD disc (although it played alright in my other 2 $50 set
top dvd players).

Then I bought another DVD - BlackBooks and got the Disc error (played
alright in all other DVD players.) Took back the DVD disc and got it
replaced at the retail outlet, but still the same disc error on the JVC
machine. Time to go back to the service centre.

Before I went there I went to the local retailer and put the two
suspect DVDs I had in a brand new DR-MV1S and guess what - no disc
error. Went to the service centre and got the line, can't expect all
dvd players to play all DVD, but they had to change their attitude when
I told them that these two suspect DVD discs played fine in another
DR-MV1S. I am waiting to see if it will be able to play these discs
after the machine is "repaired"

Is there a standard DVD that one can buy that tests a DVD players
ability to read and playback to see if it has adequate threshold
performance? Certainly there must be a certain DVD standard that has to
be met.

I have searched the web and consumers have given this unit a very poor
rating. JVC no doubt have some very bad feed back from the quality of
this unit, though I have not seen any particular mention of poor DVD
readability.
