Tim, I don't know what will happen if you try and update your iPod
given what havoc you've wreaked. The main problem is that the guys who
designed the iPod never intended it to be used as a sort of portable
mass-storage device (or probably intended that it not be used for such
purposes). Think of the digital camera - how often do people transfer
pictures from their computers into their cameras? Is that even
possible? How many people even try to answer that question.

Nevertheless, you're obviously not the first person driven to these
circumstances. I had seen a thread which I'm linking below. Perhaps
therein is the answer.
