Content-wise, maybe, if you're actually downloading full DVD-rips, but
most things aren't full rips so you don't get the menus and the extras
and all that. Aesthetic-wise though, you don't get the packaging or
the inserts or any of the rest, so you get a DVD with a hand-lettered
title and nothing else and probably missing half the content.

Depends on how much you're downloading. My computer is on 24/7/365,
downloading constantly. I wouldn't have time to download anything
more, just the list of torrents I want right now is at least 3-4 weeks
worth of content and I add more every day. I download all of my
television content, tons of fansubbed anime, old, rare movies that
aren't available, foreign films, etc. Who the hell has time to
download something that will be out on DVD in 2 months?

Yet the RIAA and MPAA are whining about it constantly. There comes a
time when you have to deal with reality as it comes and not as you
want it to be. Look at all the millions of dollars they waste chasing
people who will not, under any circumstances, buy their products. Who
is paying those costs? THE CONSUMERS!
I'm surprised more people don't tell the RIAA and MPAA to go fuck
themselves and start downloading.
