Long ago this was a problem due to the chemical reaction of different
lubricants used by Panasonic and Sony, basically the only manufacturers
of mini dv tape, although TDK and JVC make them now (TDK's formulation
being more Sony-like and JVC's being almost identical to Panasonic).
The problem was largely resolved but we always recommend a head
cleaning and if possible a "dry run" over the heads before switching
tapes.
