You could use a real newsreader client (I use Outlook
Express, but there are many of them) and connect to a
real NNTP server. There are several of them out there
that offer paid subscriptions (on the order of ~$100/yr?)
and some that are free (a popular one is in Germany).
Google returned 34,400,000 hits for: free usenet
I was pretty surprised. I doubt that there are 34
million users of Usenet.
My ISP subcontracts Usenet service to Supernews, one
of the larger NNTP providers on the planet. But AOL,
per usual, seems to offer up only their AOL-proprietary
version of the internet. For these kinds of reasons, AOL
appears to be losing customers right and left, perhaps
you should consider joining them.
Note that even with conventional news clients, you will
have to set up "rules" to filter whatever. And it likely
is never 100% effective as the spammer slimeballs
use all sorts of methods to get around filtering (such as
mis-spelling, etc.)
