Well, tackling this problem with Photoshop would even be better then. The
Magic Eraser only removes the bits of white it can find in the area you
click in. So if there is a bit of white, say inside a letter, which you
want to keep, this will not be touched.
If you do a luma-key then as Ptravel suggests, you would indeed need to
draw a garbage-matte to prevent the white areas which you want to keep,
from being keyed out.
