Indicative of a dying drive?

Posted by Atropos on 09/12/06 13:21

An NEC 4570A - used externally in a prolific housing with a laptop via USB.

All used to work fine. No probs for the first 6 months. I left it for 5,
then came back and it was working okay for a month but now:

Drive suddenly starts taking ages for the laptop to recognise it. Green
light staying on for some time. Requires several power on/offs.

Drive suddenly doesn't recognise DVDR at first few attempts. Needs power
on/offs or ejecting and re-entering disks.

Drive really hates DVD+R - will not rip them.

Drive starts failing midway through a burn with DVD Decrypter with I/O
errors. This is new - has happened a couple times in the last 24 hours.

Is it on the way out? Or is the housing crapping out?

Cheers
