I did an experiment a few years ago. I encoded one of my favorite
songs at 128kbps and 192kbps. I then burned the 2 lossy versions and
the original CD version to a CD to play on my stereo. I struggled to
tell any difference or loss of quality between the 3 versions. And I
concentrated. It was a humbling experience because I was always
thought 128 just wasn't good enough.
So if I have 128 or 160 files in my collection, I'm content to keep
them, and I don't try to find a 192 or VBR-standard replacement like I
used to.
Try the experiment yourself.
