I own the exact same camera and I am having the exact same problem. I
found that you can download the USB driver for the DCR-HC40. That
allowed the camera to work when I put it into "USB Stream" mode. But
standard USB mode and Firewire are just not working for me. I know it
is not my Firewire cable or the port on my PC, because I have used a
friend's Panasonic DV camcorder over my same Firewire cable.
If anyone knows a solution to this (that doesn't involve ordering a $70
CD) I would really really like to know!!
