I think I found the reason - Anapod does not rip CDA format on the fly
for you - you have to do it yourself!

How do I transfer music from a CD to my iPod?
You cannot just drag and drop a track from a CD to your iPod. Your iPod
does not know how to play the raw audio data that is stored on a CD.
In order to transfer the music, you first need to do what is called
ripping and encoding. This is a process where you 'rip' the raw audio
from the CD and 'encode' it into a digital music file format such as
MP3. Currently, Anapod does not feature integrated ripping and
encoding, as there are a number of good, free rippers available. Our
personal favorite for ripping and encoding is Audiograbber. We are not
affiliated with Audiograbber, we just like the program lot.

So the process of moving music from a regular commercial music CD to
your Ipod using Anapod is twofold: rip it from CDA to MP3, then drag it
to Anapod. I would assume the same is true for video formats - you
would need to rip it int MP4 yourself before using Anapod. Not very
convinient, is it...?
I wonder how this works with commercial version of Winamp, using the
Ipod plugin - would it convert for me on the fly? Or would it be all
the better to just stick with Itunes?
