At home, my middle son has an iPod Nano and a Win98 machine. That combo
rules out itunes. He has tried several of these itune work alikes.
currently he is using freerip to rip and encode music. I don't recall
which of the ipod drivers he is using, but he goes into winamp to put
the songs onto the ipod. And that combo works for him.
As for converting on the fly - I don't know if it isn't working, or if
he just never tried it. We are not connected to the internet with that
machine (obviously), so there isn't an advantage of one ripper over
another I guess.
I've tried numerous times to download freedb to put it onto his
machine, but for some reason have been unsuccessful getting the .7z
files to expand. So I don't know yet if we can find a Win98 free app
that will read the freedb files, to help with the mp3 id3 tag creation.
