Angus,
replacing the capacitors would possibly fix the problem, it's
worth trying before a new motherboard.
It worked for me with a Gigabyte VAXP motherboard.
The 'Gold thing' is a heatsink for one of the motherboard chips,
possibly the South bridge chipset.
