Sorry to keep arguing with you, Joshua... :)

Of course, it is perfectly feasible to run a film at 24fps in PAL,
simply by repeating a field ever half second. This is essentially no
different to the 3:2 pulldown technique used in NTSC to go from 23.98
to 59.94, only it's much more visually disturbing. It has been used
commercially in the past however on films where the producer deemed
that the pitch speedup on the music would be unacceptable - the
commercial PAL VHS release of Jane Campion's film 'The Piano' is one
example.

I have a huge collection of both PAL and NTSC DVDs so I'm used to
seeing and hearing both natively - and each has its own merits. I
prefer the look of PAL films for their frame coherency - no 3:2
pulldown artefacts to disturb the eye on panning shots etc. Being
brought up in the UK, I have never noticed that PAL looks flickery and
certainly NTSC doesn't look any more 'solid' to me. Generally, the 4%
PAL speedup is of no consequence to me - I don't have a musical ear
and if I have no reference then I don't notice the higher pitch on
voices etc.

The exception to this is something like 'Lost', where my first
exposure was by watching downloaded xvids from the US broadcasts. In
this case I *do* notice the pitch change in the voices, so tend to buy
the NTSC DVD releases - which are cheaper too! ;)
