It's an awkward time we're in right now Bill. Just had a conversation
with someone weighing up the Panasonic DVX100 with the Sony A1 HDV. In
some ways the Panasonic is a better cameras but it's still a door stop
as far as UK market needs demand.
As far as the OP is concerned though there's also the second hand
market. There must be a good choice of good used Beta SP cameras out
there? I presume that Beta SP work for the US market is still 4x3 ? Over
here in the UK you can buy a DXC 637 with a PVV3 backend with a Fujinon
Pegasus 14x8x2 for as little as 5K Pounds ($8,750). Or how about a used
DXC 30 with a PVV3 and Pegasus 7K Pounds ($12,250) which also allows the
fitting of a DSR 1 DVCAM backend or a Beta SX, another couple of grand
will get a DSR D35WS which adds 16x9 to the tool kit.
I guess it all about business models, if one can earn enough to pay for
the kit and make enough profit with the next 18 to 34 months, then it's
viable
