For anyone that is still interested in this thread. Someone else managed to
get the original Tiscali modem going on a hard-wire trailed across the
living room.

At one point, the DSL light was on and internet light flashing on the router
and I would have thought that signified that the router or line had sprung
back to life but IE just bought up that lack of connection page

Ah well - got a connection in one form
