Thanks so much for the advice, Franc!  I looked around on videohelp.comand found a hack that worked!
 
 1) No disc in the unit
 2) Power on
 3) Press '9735' on remote
 4) This brings up an information screen - use right arrow to access
 region choice and up/down to choose
