What is the file type you want to convert? You'll only get a significant
savings if it's not already compressed. Compressing sacrifices quality. File
size savings from uncompressed to compressed is usually worthwhile after its
edited. The loss from one compressed format to another for size saving is
not likely to be worth the quality loss.
For example if you have uncompressed AVI from a DV video camera and compress
it to MPG2 it will be much smaller. You could take the original AVI and
compress it to MPG4 and get a smaller file without significant extra loss,
but if you take the MPG2 and convert it to MPG4 you'll get the loss of 2
compressions but not a significantly smaller file size than the MPG2.
Most DVD players won't play MPG4. It would have to be converted back to MPG2
to be used in one and their would be another quality loss. I store
everything in MPG2.
