The $20 figure was valid at a time when the cheapo players were US$39
here in the States. (They're $29 now). Note that it's relatively
difficult to get department-store quantities of unlicensed imports like
that into the US, and the DVD cartel is US-based - and pursues this
sort of thing aggressively.
It's somewhat easier to get IP-gray equipment into Europe.
