The bottom side (the side the laser reads through) is a
polycarbonate plastic nearly half a millimeter thick.
Ever see those clear discs they put under the stack of CD-R discs?
THAT is a blank. The polymer layer gets attached to that, and the
lacquer goes over it. That is how far the read side is from the
polymer layer, and THAT is why the top side (printed side) is far
closer to the polymer layer than the bottom side. The bottom side IS
plastic, and the top side IS a mere coating.
