But that would have been an entirely new format. Same size disk maybe, but
a new format all the same. Similar to the ability of DVD players to play
CDs. But no-one has suggested that they are the same format (even though
they are far closer than most people imagine).

I fail to see why, especially as the market was well used to similar sized
disks for audio recordings. Why would they expect video records to be
smaller? When I was in the retail market, the only thing that made
potential customers buy a VHS machine instead of the laser disc really was
the inability to record on the latter. If it could have done that, it would
have displaced VHS as the de facto video medium.

But nevertheless, it survived for a very long time given the small market
penetration and the technical hurdles which were clearly overcome. The
wobble at the outer edge of the platter would be exactly the same as the
wobble at the inner edge for any given disk. It is entirely a function of
how off centre the hole in the middle is and masalignments in the clamping.
The same issue affects CDs and DVDs though both of these have deliberate
wobbling of the track.
