Big words from someone that uses a GUI like Forte.
The "original system" was text based.
People used programs like rn, slrn, tin and nn to read Usenet newsgroups.
If you had ever used any of those programs, you would know that top
posts were much easier to read when following threaded articles.
You didn't have to scroll down to find the new comments on a posted
article.
I still use nn from the unix command line. I find it much quicker to
find and scan newsgroup articles.
Common courtesy dictates that bottom posting is the norm. However,
you don't have to fly into a foaming rage, cursing and yelling at
top-posting. Inform the poster or killfile them if annoys you that
much.
