Sony does indeed make more than just Playstations, but it's the revenue
from Playstation software sales that makes up the majority of their
profits. Computers and consumer electronics don't bring in big margins -
the market's too competitive now a days. Sony makes most of their profits
from the licensing of the Playstation to the game developers. This is why
Sony - like every other console company - sells their game hardware at a
loss so that people will buy the console, then (hopefully) buy many many
games.
Problem is, the PS3 is more expensive, and has fewer games right now - not
a good combination. The PS3 is also $600 - $200 more than a Xbox 360, and
$350 more than the Nintndo's Wii. While the Playstation2 and its software
continues to sell briskly, Sony has sunk an huge amount of money into the
PS3 hoping it would take off as fast as the PS2 did when it was released.
So far, it's been a disaster.

Sony wasn't the only company making BetaMax players, either, yet we all
know how THAT face-off ended...
Company size means nothing. If the consumers make a choice, the companies
will follow.
By the time the true "killer titles" are out for either format, hybrid
players will be available - and at competive prices. You might as well be
arguing that DVD-R is better than DVD+R - no one cares anymore.
