iTunes Playback Problem

Posted by X-User on 01/20/07 18:14

I have an old Dell desktop: Pentium III, 384MB RAM, Windows 2000 Pro SP4.
I recently installed iTunes v.7. I've never had any previous version.
I've been experiencing an annoying problem when I play music with iTunes
-- any music at all, including purchases from the iTunes Store and songs
from my MP3 collection. What happens is that several seconds of the song
are lost. It's not that I get gaps of silence, but that pieces of the
song get skipped over. Here's an example: "Twinkle, twink, little star."
The effect never occurs in the same place twice. So, the next time I play
it, I might get, "Twinkle, twinkle, lit star." Yet, when I play these
very same MP3s with any Windows application (such as WinAmp or Creative
Labs), I never, ever, have this problem. There are a number of possible
explanations. I'll suggest a few, then ask for others.

1. my Dell is just too old to run iTunes v. 7
2. I need to tinker with the audio properties
3. this is a PC / Apple compatibility issue
4. here's the sinister explanation -- iTunes intentionally degrades
playback because Apple wants you to buy an iPod

Any other thoughts? If the problem is #2 above, what should I do?
TIA.
