Why are downloads so slow

Posted by Pete on 03/21/07 00:56

Hi everyone,

I just recently started using WinMX (v3.54beta4) to download some mp3 music
files. I am running Windows xpsp2, and I have a cable modem (usually tests
at approx 1.7 mbps on the speed test), and don't have any trouble with most
downloads off the web. I am very surprised at how slow the downloads are on
winmx. They range from 0-10 kbps usually (infrequently they will go up to
20-30 kbps, but rarely), and are always fluctuating, and sometimes bottoming
out to zero and never returning.

I am very pleased with Winmx, but I was led to believe it was much faster
(it often takes several minutes just to download a 3-4 mb song). Are the
pay versions any faster (you know - the so much per month, or $40 lifetime
crap, if you google winmx). I read in the forum that slow downloads could
be caused by your ISP throttling winmx, but I tend to doubt that (I wrote
and asked them - they might not even know what I was asking).

Anyway could the main reason for the "snail dial up type" download speeds,
just be because of the huge volume of traffic from all the people all over
the world using it (this is my gut feel). Is there anyway I can increase
the speed by changing some settings (I couldn't see any - but don't know
enough about it).

I don't think the booster crap is any good, and don't know how it works, or
if it does work, and if it may cause other problems, etc. I know when I
used to have dial up, the Propel accelerators (which were not accelerating
anything) were a piece of shit, and all they did was compress files
(yielding lesser image quality), and provide another cache for temp Internet
files - real bullshit - and could actually cause more problems then help -
lockups, interference with other applications, etc.

As an aside, I tried to download the movie King Kong (just to see what would
happen), and it was running at about 2-3 kbps and would have taken two days
or more to download (if it didn't bottom out, or time out, or whatever).
And it gave me a windows error message when I tried to play it when it was
downloading (which I can do with the music w/o any problem). Is it even
feasible to download movies using winmx. Doesn't look like it to me. I
installed it for the music, but I am curious about the movies.

Any comments would be greatly appreciated. Thanks...Pete
