Check the settings in system folder and see if it is running PIO
mode or DMA. I supsect you will find it is PIO - very slow.
To fix it you delete the drive from that menu. I know that sounds
counter-intuitive - but when you reboot MS will say it has found
new hardward, and it should pick up the fact that the drive is now
in DMA mode. If not - you have some other problems - perhaps
cabling or the IDE connector you are on.
At times if you have a problem reading a disk MS will set the drive
from DMA to PIO. But it will not set it back unless you delete it
and then let the system re-find the drive.
