Good god, that was quick! I'd be well pissed off if I'd bought one all of
about two months ago at 999 only to see it crash to 450 that quickly! So
either they were making a phenomenal profit on the price tag of 999 or now
they're making a substantial loss in order to desperately push Blu-ray into
homes before it's too late. 450 is still a lot of money to many people.
It's got to get down to around the 100 mark before they'll even consider
it, but it should be there within 2 years the way it's going. Hopefully by
that time we'd be able to pick up a decent brand 32" HD LCD for 300 or so
to go with it (or a 37" for 400).

I've heard it's actually better than the Samsung for Blu-ray at 1080p.
There's a good review of a US model on DVD Times:

It's encouraging that Sony say they are going to upgrade the software in the
future to enable standard def DVD upscaling, but again once you take into
account the price of the console plus the Blu-ray remote and HDMI cable, it
still ain't cheap. And as far as the gaming side of things goes, from the
way it's still pretty difficult to get hold of a Nintendo Wii more than
three months after release, it suggests that the public isn't necessarily
bothered about hi-def.
