DVD FAQ is wrong. I myself bought a first generation player in 1997
(Phillips 400AT) for $450. It was a clone of the Toshiba SD2006, and
even earlier model which had cost about $500 and had come out that
spring.

I still have that 400AT, BTW, or, rather, my parents do. Still plays
flawlessly. They built them a lot better then, before the sub-$100
players came in with their cheap parts.
