OK, so the processor is alive and there is no child lock.

That would rule out interference from IR sources such as CF lamps.

A web cam or digicam can usually see the IR emissions from a remote
control. If some buttons produce a flash but others not, then
disassemble the remote control and clean the contacts, on both the PCB
and rubber pad, with a cotton bud swabbed in isopropyl alcohol.
