DVD will be around until HDTV dominates the market, dragging
HD-DVD/Blu-Ray along with it. And even then, DVD upscaled to 1080p will
still probably be "good enough" for most people. The studios will have to
stop releasing stuff on DVD altogether, while pricing the HD stuff to be
just as cheap (if not cheaper) in order to get folks to switch.

I'd give it another 10 years. Remember, you could still buy stuff on VHS
for years even after DVD had dominated the market.

As other people have mentioned, there's also a 3rd possibility that is
quickly gaining ground - electronic distribution/storage of movies. As
technology pushes storage and broadband it could very well be that HD-DVD
and blu-ray are nothing more than a stopgap technology before things go
(mostly) to a fully networked streaming solution.
