Here's where you are wrong. He knows his way around computers to the
point even I was impressed, but then I had other, non-newsgroups
(private) contact with him that allowed me to get a better look at who
the 'person' of Hammerer really was and what made him tick.

He is a bit like every other super-intelligent person I know. They
cope with an extraordinary mentality in various ways that sometimes
causes others around them to become annoyed. His lampooning suckers
that came here was only after he detected vulnerability in them, which
made them the obvious target for plundering humor, but still, always
in humor, no real malice intended ever. He did not have a hateful way
of being humorous at some else's expense. And if my dad doesn't see
this, I'll be eternally grateful: Hammerer has a way of thinking that
amounts to this: "Fuck'm if they can't take a joke."
(or, sorry daddy, it had to be said)

You got that right. He'd find where his 'victims' had been on usenet,
and what aliases they used. He had it down to a science.

Some posters revealed themselves as easily baited, and he supplied the
hook.

My headers tell someone that I use Giganews, not much there.
I do elude that I'm from New Zealand, which I am. Come on over, this
is still a beautiful country.
The really obvious suckers come in using their own ISP, use Outlook,
or Netscape, or a browser using Google which leads a well-lit path
right to their door. Hammerer knew a bit more about headers. There
are identity exploits in the header information, even from Giganews or
Easynews, or any other news server that claims to make post anonymous.
They hide your IP address, but leave a few breadcrumbs laying around
that can be picked up and used. My dad actually owns this computer
and sends data through a mixer-upper thing before it arrives at GN
(he's the computer expert, not me), and uses several different
subscriptions to GN, thus my identity changed once, because I forgot
to check which accout I was on at the time. You came here from Google,
and your home IP number is right there for all to see and investigate
if they had a desire to do so.
Hammerer's around, just not here. He'll be back, but for now is
probably reading the post from the vipers that are dumping on him when
they used to act like friends, but alas, for them, it was only an act
too. Maybe he won't come back after all.
Hammerer, remember who loves ya,
~A~
