It could be more than a conversion problem. In my experience there are
three kinds of players in region-1 territory:

- plays PAL discs and can optionally output NTSC
- plays PAL discs but only outputs PAL in such cases (most N Am. TVs show a
monochrome rolling picture)
- outright refuses to play any disc that's not encoded for NTSC

I have a first-generation Sony player that falls in the last cateogry. It
would play VCDs encoded for PAL, and even 'convert' the the output to NTSC,
but when fed a PAL DVD, the player would say 'Incorrect region', even though
the disc is region-free. OTOH it has some interesting features not found on
modern players: jog dials on both player and remote, headphones output,
CD+G, AC3 decoder, etc.
