The problem with ripping audio books from a cd is they often have many
short tracks and to drag all of them into itunes then convert to aac and
rename to m4b is a pain in the ass.

This is what I do. I rip them all using itunes. I then merge them into 1
track with a program called mp3 merge. The link is below. There are
surely many apps that will do this but this is the one I prefer. I try
to make the merged file around 5 hours or less. I read some time ago
that the ipod has trouble handling files larger than that. This way you
only have 1 or 2 files, (depending on how you broke it up) to drag into
itunes and then change the extension.

If all you need the ipod to do is remember playback position then
renaming to .m4b is unnecessary. You can right click the file in itunes
and click get info/options/remember playback position. Personally I do
like them to show up under audiobooks in the ipod so I prefer to convert
to aac and then rename. It is an extra step but its no big deal. Hope
this helps.
