It is considered lower than CD quality, but to be honest, what matters
to you is how it sounds to you.
For sharing, these days folk prefer larger files, as many people have
broadband. Having said that, there must be dial-uppers around who would
pick smaller files.

How about buying an internal PCI drive, which your wife wont be able to
see, and wont need extra space and cables? ;o)
- They are getting very cheap per megabyte nowadays.

Another option would be to burn to CD or DVD, but this is actually more
expensive than a new HD, byte for byte.
