In some cases, Joint-Stereo can be more effective than Left-Right channel
Stereo on compressed audio tracks. (Which is probably what you mean
when you say 'proper' stereo!) I wouldn't say 'always' more effective, as in
my experience it does depend on the MP3 encoder used. Better? No, not
better than the original source material, but if you are ripping CD tracks to
MP3, Joint-Stereo can be more efficient.
