The Forge supports this, w/ variable-speed forward/reverse (faster the
longer the control is held).

I think the Forge has a 1 GB limit for the *plugin* SD card, regardless
of the amount of built-in memory. (My SO's Forge has 512MB built-in and
a 1GB SD card installed). Interestingly, I've never been able to get
DRM-protected material to play properly if stored on the SD card, only
if in the built-in memory. Non-DRM'd stuff is fine on the SD.

Uses 1 AAA. We use a rechargeable NiMH that seems to give (roughly) 15
hours play time on a charge.

Will record from built-in FM radio tuner, but has no built-in mic nor
connection for an external one.
May not be the world's best MP3 player, but they show up on eBay at
cheap prices.
