All files downloaded from the iTunes Store are in the protected AAC format
(.m4p) which generally only play on iPods or through the iTunes software
on your computer. An iPod can also play unprotected AAC files (.m4a) or MP3
files. So if you are ripping tracks from a CD to play on your iPod, you can
choose which of those formats you prefer.
