There is a substantial diference though.
The way I heard it, they weren't suggesting that we dig a big hole
and just pour the nuclear waste into it.
They were going to encapsulate it to prevent it from leaking into the
environment.
However, my father (born around the turn of the last century)
used to have that same thought about stuff coming from the
ground might as well go back into it. He used to change his oil
and just dig a little hole and pour it in. That was a long time ago.
