OK, I found the answer. It is a free app that really seems to do the job of
converting .tod files to mpeg and more....

It does not seem to list .tod files on it's page, but it does it.

I have been pulling files straight from the camera to my PC, without using
JVCs horrific software. The camera complains upon it's next startup, but it
gets over it quickly.
