Perhaps you could mix in a constant high frequency signal that is stronger
than the peak of your audio board output. This would cause AGC to maintain a
more or less constant gain. Then filter out the extra signal during post.
This experiment may be more trouble than it's worth, unless you happen to
have all the necessary equipments already.
If the unshielded cable is a balanced cable (3 wires), you may be ok.
Otherwise, you would probably get a lot of AC hum and other noise. In which
case you don't need to mix in a high frequency signal. The AC hum may do the
job :)
