The Oppo players are frequently recommended here; I've got the
971 and recommend it. You can find out how to hack Oppo players
(and most others) to remove region code compliance at
www.videohelp.com.
Oppo has replaced the 971 with the 981; I'm guessing that the
following consideration about PAL-to-NTSC conversion applies
to the 981, too. Many players will do the frequency conversion
but won't do the cadence conversion. The 971 does do cadence
conversion but only out the HDMI interface. You'll find this
a big deal if any of the French PAL DVDs you're interested in
feature dance.
