Alleged Region 2 DVDs from France play perfectly on my Mac Mini
computer- just pop in and fire up the DVD Player program that is part
of OSX 10.3. This is the original Mac Mini from Jan 2005.
Not being aware of the above or even that as a possibility, I had
purchased a LiteOn LVC-9016G (12-2005 mfr date) DVD/VHS player/
recorder combination machine (~$200) because it was touted as "zone-
free" and I figured the added feature of rendering my old VHS tapes
onto DVD would be a definite plus. The included literature denies it,
but this box plays my Region 2 DVDs from France seamlessly. Just
played another one to verify.
Cheaper DVD 'players-only' can be "zone free" in fact. When you get
your first French DVD take it to Walmart, etc and see if it plays.
There is a good chance one of the inexpensive players will do the job
for you.
Quality & reliability should not be an issue with region/zone
capability; either if works or it doesn't.
In the interest of full disclosure I thought it best to play my French
DVDs on an old Panasonic DVD player- DVD-S35 (Jan 2003 mfr date).
Video is perfect but ZERO audio!! Ok, why not on the IBM T-23 notebook
running Windoz 2000 (TM). Ripped the celophane off a fresh French DVD:
perfect audio & video using InterVideo DVD player (presumably part of
the OS).
N.B. All I really know about these 12 French DVDs is that they say
'Zone 2' in a black logo between the DVD Video & Dolby Digital logos
on the back of the box. Also that these are fresh production re-
issues of old US films, a few with French dubbing but most with
original soundtrack. So they could be *really* zone 2 DVDs, proof
being the lack of audio using my Panasonic player, or something in
between??
Certainly Karen does not have to go file-converting and all the other
complicated steps as mentioned above- sheesh!! Maybe she just needs to
fire up a DVD Player program on her computer- it could be that simple.
