No. iTunes and the current generation of iPods both natively support the
above listed formats.

And for the record, when you convert something into "iTunes' own
format," it's M4A, not M4P. M4P is reserved for purchases from the
iTunes Music Store.

I think you're wrong.

Even when you manually synch, songs that aren't in your iTunes library
will be deleted from the iPod.

The solution is to manage the music on your iPod manually and to not
synch at all.
