If it is an older player, the head can sag and fall out of calibration
(read ideal calibration).
Try turning the player upside down during playback. If the problem goes
away, it isn't a dirty head, it's an out of cal head.
They are suspended on a helical spring, and as it sags, the factory
calibration gets skewed.
I have had plenty of PC readers that would "no longer read a disc" that
would read fine when turned upside down.
If you are really smart, you can obtain a calibration disc, and the
factory calibration procedure, and re-cal it. Not easy these days, and
cheaper to just get another player. That is, if your personal time is
worth over $100 an hour to you, like mine is. They are like watches.
Just pitch it and get a new one.
The upside down test does reveal if that is the problem however.
