actually tried mustering (no pun intended!) some of the various horse
business (big to small).

a. they all wanted to know how many copies were likely to sell (i didn't
know prior to producing it, and wasn't willing to lie)

b. i wasn't being greedy, but i wasn't going to put even a logo in for
less than $250aus. considering the mags charge min $500 for a reasonable
size (1/8th to 1/4qt page), i though a nicely presented 'simple
animated' logo worth $250.

now, well it's a different story, they all want ads, etc., i shot the
event with two cameras, (a friend came up for the three days and helped
out on 2nd camera). if i costed the whole thing out according to what i
would have charged when i ran my production and post house in sydney, i
reckon i'd be looking at around $7k (plus expenses). let's say $10k. so
at the end of the day, it was very well worthwhile - but it was a
gamble.... then again, if you're in business, you have to be a bit of a
gambler anyway.

as a 'thanks' to the event organisers i let them sell dvd's from their
merchandise stall of the previous years (i've done it two years in a
row) - still at $25, but let them keep $7.50. i suppose they sold around
150. now they want me to do it again. but after doing it twice off my
own back, i told them i'd do a 50/50% split on all dvd sales if they'd
fork up $5k up front.and handled the marketing / distribution. they
hummed and arr'ed for three committee meetings, came back with an offer
of $3k, which i refused.

having established my credentials as a 'horsey shooter' (something i
never thought i'd ever do), i'm now looking at the racehorse industry
here now, sort of mini stud profiles for whatever...

we'll see

leslie
