"S-IPS" stands for "Super IPS," a trade name for one
of several LCD designs using the in-plane switching (IPS)
mode of operation. The other two types in widespread use
are the twisted-nematic, or TN, mode, and various versions
of "vertical alignment" (VA, and you see names such as MVA,
PVA, etc.). In the IPS types, you also see such things as
"Advanced Super IPS," "IPS-Pro," etc.. All are various
manufacturer's names for different constructions of similar
basic technology.
The VA and IPS modes both offer inherently better viewing
angles and color performance than the TN, although IPS has
generally had a better reputation in terms of its color
performance than VA. Both types are made by several LCD
manufacturers; the leading IPS houses include LG Philips, Hitachi,
NEC, and Hannstar, although not all of these are currently
producing monitor panels in this technology.
