WinMX doesn't have parity checking. That means is a download is interrupted
and then resumed (often from another source) the file may be corrupted but
complete all the same. Later p2p apps have built-in parity checking to avoid
that situation. This is only a problem for long files as a short file is
likely to be downloaded quickly all in one go. The only movie I've ever
watched via WinMX was a cam of Starsky & Hutch and the movie was so bad to
begin with it hardly mattered how corrupted the file was.

It depends on the quality you're after. I generally prefer DVD files which
are too big for eMule so I use newgroups instead. The most popular movie
format is 700MB XviD downloaded via BitTorrent. These can be burned on a
regular CD and played back on many (but not all) standalone DVD players.
BT's built-in parity checking ensures the file won't be corrupted. You can
also check on the quality of any XviD you plan to download at VCDQuality.com
but don't try posting any questions there :o)
