Magic e (as any person with any knowledge of English grammar knows) sits at
the end of a word and remains silent.

It is simply there to make the vowel before the final consonant sound like
it's name

THEREFORE:

as shit does not have a magic e at the end it is pronounced sh then it
(short I sound)

however, shite DOES have a magic e at the end and so it is pronounced sh I
te (long I sound)
