Shaw definitely had the right idea. Written language should "echo" (pun
intended) the spoken language. There should be no such thing as differently
spelt homonyms. We are obliged to infer from spoken context which
definition a word takes on, and we do so effortlessly (for the most part).
Why is it necessary to struggle with archaic spelling patterns?

If I wrote, "Hough nough brown cough" you'd still know what I meant, eh?
Just in case one doesn't, they "rime" with bough ;-0)

Jestingly:
Slew, slow, sluff
-----------------------
I once took a girl named Sue
across a Washington slough.
While there we saw a cow
That was mired in the slough.
When set free, it was in a huff;
so eager the mud to slough.
