whoops, I almost forgot....

If clerk wants you to fill out a return slip with name, phone number
and address, use your worst handwriting imaginable and your signature
should not be distinguishable from marks left by a cat attack. Don't
use your real phone number, put a fake one down.

If they somehow contact you later to report that the music you returned
was actually opened before they took it back, politely and dumbly
insist that you never opened it. Unless their store camaras have
telephoto lenses, so that the video tape reveals you returning a cd
case with a sliced bottom edge ( ! ), they acceptance of the cd legally
means they have accepted all interest and/or loss legally. Some time
must inevitably pass between you getting your money back and them
calling you. By then, anything could have happened to that cd after
you returned it and it was out of your control.

However, don't think the authorities will refrain from prosecuting
simply because the property in question is $15, while the cop,
prosecutor and judge make more than that per hour. Yes, they WILL
SPEND $3,000 for the cops, judge prosecutor and your court appointed
lawyer in order to prosecute a $15 loss by theft.
